Vancouver Island weekend tour

I am quite excited to be heading over to Vancouver Island for another little weekend tour:

Thursday Feb. 23 in Courtenay at the Elk’s Hall,
Friday Feb. 24 in Duncan at the Garage Showroom, and
Saturday Feb. 25 in Victoria at Hermann’s.

Joining me is my talented (and handsome) bass player Sam Shoichet. He’s got the van, so I had to bring him, lol! In Courtenay we’ll be playing with Jeff Drummond on guitar, thanks to a connection with the Georgia Straight Jazz & Blues Society who invited me to play.

In Duncan, John MacArthur will be joining us on guitar, and John comes highly recommended from the Victoria Jazz Society. At Hermann’s we are adding Damian Graham on drums, so that should be a fun, energetic show.

We got a a very nice write up on the Island Jazz blog.

I hope if you are on the Island and looking for some beautiful music, you’ll come out to a show.

2011 in review, and what’s up in 2012

2011 in Review

At this time of year it is common to take time and remember what happened in the past 12 months; what we accomplished, planted the seeds for, and the highlights of the year. Here are mine:

- In March I found out that Factor had approved my Demo Recording grant application. Woo hoo!

- In April I hit the road, touring Vancouver Island playing Courtenay, Duncan, and Victoria, and performed at the Enderby Drill Hall at the invitation of the Enderby and District Arts Council

- I started the Arts & Entertainment Management Program at Capilano University in May

- Returned to the Okanagan Shuswap in June to play WOW in Salmon Arm (I love outdoor concerts)

- I worked a contract position with the Vancouver Folk Festival in June and July; met so many great artists and had a great time at the Festival despite the rain

- Over the summer finished recording ‘Precious Time’ with producer Doug Naugler

- My partner asked if I would marry her, and I said yes!

- In August we traveled to Ontario to visit family and then spent 5 days in Montreal on vacation

- In September I started my internships at Coastal Jazz & Blues Society and Turner Music

- I was invited to perform on TV in November; I played my new song ‘Precious Time’ on Shaw Cable’s Urban Rush program

What’s in store for 2012

My focus for the next four months is school, since I will graduate in April. I will be continuing my internship with Turner Music, and taking on a Communications position with the Pride in Art Society. There I will be learning the ropes of marketing and PR for a small non-profit arts organization. I am very excited for all that I will learn.

In February I am touring Vancouver Island again. See dates and venues here.

I will occasionally be playing in Vancouver as well, and I won’t know about my summer schedule until the spring. I will definitely be performing in the Okanagan and Shuswap sometime, and possibly the Kootenays as well.

In my personal life, I will be continuing to plan my wedding (August 1st). It has been an exciting, creative, although sometimes stressful journey so far. Being blissfully in love helps.

Upon completing the Capilano program, I will be forging my career path within the arts community of Vancouver. I am optimistic that the right position will present itself, and confident in my choice to return to school (despite my advanced age, LOL!).

Oh yeah, and my resolution for 2012 is simple: to floss more.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for supporting what I do as a musician. It is so encouraging to know that there are people out there who listen to my music, and look forward to seeing me perform live. I wish all of you the best for 2012: health, joy, and inspiration. Love, Flora

This coming Wednesday, November 23, 2011, I will be appearing on Urban Rush- a local lifestyle and entertainment program here in BC’s lower mainland.

I will be performing my new song, Precious Time, with my band, Flora and the Faunics.

This is a great opportunity to reach a wider audience and I’m looking forward to the experience!
